Voter Summit, an annual socially conservative conference. The President addressed such

issues as the so-called “War on Christmas” that has been waged by certain anti-
conservatist and independepent non-religious groups by stating that: “We are stopping

cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values” and “They want to be politically correct. If I’m
president, you will see ‘Merry Christmas’ in department stores, believe me, believe me.”
The President also tackled issues concerning healthcare, criticizing the effects of
Obamacare on the national economy, the healthcare system in general as well as the
Democratic party for still supporting it.

Miami, Florida
Sunday, October 15th

Tens of thousands (approximately fifty-thousand in total) of South Floridians
stood for hours in the scorching heat on Sunday afternoon at Tropical Park, waiting to
apply for special food stamps available only to victims Hurricane Irma. State officials
were expecting just a fraction of that response. According to Ms. Ofelia Martinez, the
Miami site manager for the state Department of Children and Families (DCF): “We’ve
been dealing with about 10,000 people a day, but when we opened the doors this morning,
the police told us there were already 50,000 people waiting outside.” The “Food for
Florida Disaster Food Assistance Program”, as the program is formally known, has been
funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has been operating under the DCF. It is
designed to assist people in forty-eight (48) counties across the state, who aren’t eligible
for food stamps but suffered losses during Hurricane Irma last month.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
Tuesday, October 17th

A small creek some miles outside of San Juan (in the neighbourhood of
Guaynabo), became a violent river, rapidly picking up trees, pipes and rubble from a
mountainside where they had been dumped after Hurricane Maria. The debris added
enormous weight and force to a mudslide that wept out a large bridge in Guaynabo,
completely stranding and isolating families who may now have to hike through
mountainous, overgrown terrain to get food and water. This incident occurred in the
working class part of the same neighborhood where a couple of weeks ago, during his
official visit, President Donald Trump, accompanied by the First Lady addressed the
civilians and officials of Puerto Rico handing out first-aid materials and goods to those
who had been directly affected by the storm.

Houston, Texas
Thursday, October 19th

The Houston Astros are facing the New York Yankees in a final Game 6 (or
extended 7, should the Astros win) of the American League Division Series of the Major
League Baseball League. Much like in the ALDS against the Cleveland Indians, the New

York Yankees appeared to be dead in the water in the ALCS after falling behind 2-0 to the
Houston Astros. A trip to the Big Apple however turned the wheel around, and they now
the team from New York hold a 3-2 series advantage with the action shifting back to
Houston and the Astro’s homeground, the “Minute Maid Park”. New York has momentum
firmly on its side following an 8-1 win in Game 3, a stirring 6-4 win in Game 4 that saw it
erase a 4-0 deficit late and a 5-0 triumph in Game 5.

Salt Lake City, Utah
Friday, October 20th

A haboob swept through downtown Salt Lake City early Friday afternoon. A
“haboob” (which is derived from the Arabic language) is a strong sand or dust storm that
typically moves in as a wall, reaching heights of more than a thousand feet and dropping
visibility to almost zero. It typically occurs in dry weather, and is followed up by very
powerful winds. Those winds can originate from thunderstorm outflow, or larger scale
atmospheric forcing like a dry line or front. Recent dry weather in the region, suggests that there was a lot of dust on the ground. As the strong line of wind pushed into the area, all of that dust was lifted high up into the atmosphere. Wind gusts at the time of the event were between 55 and 60 miles per hour.
